Basic ratio at which the spool turns in relation to the handle moving; as an example a reel with a gear ratio of 4.3:1 will have the spool rotate 4.3 times per 1 turn of the handle.

The Skipper's Tip

Match the gear ration of your reel to the lure or style that you want to use, if you are only going to purchase one reel get a fast one just make sure to slow down your retrieval rate.
