This is an initial layer of cheap fishing line added directly onto the spool prior to spooling on your normal line to help fill the spool to capacity and save on expensive line.

The Skipper's Tip

If you use a braided fishing line it is a good idea to put some mono backing on the spool first as this will provide some grip.
